As a physical therapist, have you ever wondered to yourself and asked the question, is there more to our PT career besides the repetitive protocols and the ongoing administration of tireless exercises? Well if that question has ever made a dwelling place in your mind, then pediatric physical therapy may be your next avenue to consider.
There are so many remarkable joys in regards to working with the pediatric population that our 1-2 pediatric physical therapy courses in PT school failed to reveal. If you think about it, pediatrics serves as a foundational piece for the proper development and progression of optimal gross motor capacity and performance. As movement specialists aka physical therapists, we certainly play an important role with helping the pediatric population attain a level of function that could ultimately serve as the movement blueprint for the rest of their lives.
You may not ever remember the exact number of degrees of flexion your first patient with a Torn rotator cuff was finally able to achieve, but I guarantee that you will never forget the amount of steps taken for the first time by your pediatric patient who couldn’t even roll over from their belly to their back. Pediatric Physical Therapy may be seen as a minimal career choice compared to other therapy career avenues, but I truly believe what is accomplished with the least ones certainly makes the biggest impact with the bonus of remarkable joys that could never be discounted.
